Composition and Film
Composition and Film

George’s composition Pop Mass received first prize in the Sydney Eisteddfod and was premiered in Colorado USA. His piece Celebration Overture was premiered by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur. He has composed music for the film Ladies in Black directed by Academy Award winning director Bruce Beresford and wrote the music for the award-winning short film Frank by Jasmin Forbes-Watson. He has also composed the orchestral music for the Lights of Christmas ceremonies at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.

In 2009, he conducted The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky on screen for the Bruce Beresford film Mao’s Last Dancer, and has composed and arranged music for Bruce Beresford’s feature film, Ladies In Black. In 2020, he composed the music for An Improbable Collection – a documentary film by Bruce Beresford.

In late 2024 and early 2025, he has composed the orchestral score to a new feature film by Academy-awarded director Bruce Beresford. The Travellers, starring Bryan Brown, is scheduled for mainstream national cinema release in April.

Mimi’s Symphony

Mimi’s Symphony, the orchestral story written by Justine Clark and myself, has been nominated for an ARIA award for Best Children’s Music Album. I loved composing this music. Performed so beautifully by the incredible Justine and The George Ellis Orchestra – I’m very humbled and honoured!

“Gloria” from Pop Mass

The clip below an excerpt of the ‘Gloria’ movement from George Ellis’ composition Pop Mass. Pop Mass premiered in the USA in 1989 and won first prize in the Composition section of the Sydney Eisteddfod in 1990. Here, it is performed by soprano soloists AJ America and Courtney Chong, Choir and Symphony Orchestra with George Ellis conducting for the HICES Music Festival at the Sydney Town Hall , 2010.
